Introduction
I’ve got a 4x4 Toyota addiction, a fascination with firearms and their mechanical details, an affinity for field watches, and a serious gear habit. A geologist by education, engineer by profession, and most recently a four-wheel-drive instructor—I’ve been at home in the outdoors my whole life.
While the website is named Tarheel Expedition, our blog is called TEQandPEW. Built for folks who live for dirt roads, camping trips, range days, everyday carry (EDC), and gear that earns its place. We'll discuss everything from past and upcoming trips, gear, and educational posts.
We’ll also feature contributing authors—close friends who share the same values and lifestyle. Everything we write about is gear we’ve bought ourselves, with our own money, and actually use. We don’t believe in safe queens or mall crawlers. If it’s on this site, it’s been in the dirt.
TEQ comes from early Toyota badging, especially in the Land Cruiser world. It’s derived from Japanese katakana characters representing the original “Toyoda” name—part history, part homage.
Pew is pretty self-explanatory. If you’re here—or if you’ve spent time in any of our group chats—you’ve probably seen pew used as a playful verb for shooting, or as a shorthand for firearms in general.
There’s a ton of crossover between the Toyota 4x4 scene and the firearms/EDC community—and most of us spend just as much time outdoors. That’s the thread that ties this all together.
This is where overlanding meets EDC. Welcome to TEQandPEW.

This site is built around gear that works—whether it’s bolted to your rig, strapped to your wrist, or tucked into your waistband. We cover the stuff that earns its keep through miles, reps, recoil, and weather.

You might drive a Toyota that’s seen more dirt than pavement. You probably know how to field strip your favorite pistol with your eyes closed, have a recovery strap in the trunk, and a tent you forgot to air out after last weekend’s trip. And chances are, you care more about how something performs than what it costs.
